Opportunities for Involvement

At Villanova, our goal is to prepare community celebrations in which the Word of God is proclaimed, nourishment received, and personal decisions are made in faith. You may choose to serve liturgically in the following ways:

Lectors proclaim the Word of the Lord to the community. Pastoral Musicians sing or play an instrument and lead the assembly in song. Hospitality Ministers welcome members of the community at the celebration. Eucharistic Ministers share the sacred Bread and Cup with the community.

SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT

Awaken Retreat Program

Awaken Retreat Program is an opportunity for members of the campus community to focus on the presence of God in their daily lives. Awaken facilitates this awareness by asking participants to leave the campus for a day or weekend and to use this time to reflect upon aspects of their lives which are often neglected furing the hectic pace of day to day living.

A variety of retreat themes are scheduled throughout the year and include retreats on leadership, social justice, and career choice, as well as retreats for men, women, and the handicapped.

For additional information contact Linda Jaczynski at Campus Ministry.

Additional programs include:

Sacramental Preparation (Baptism, Confirmation, Marriage), Pre-Cana weekends for engaged couples, Renewal Week, Scripture Reflection Prayer Group, and Bereavement Support.

COMMUNITY SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP

Campus Ministry programs foster the development of leadership in service to the poor and education for justice, reflecting the model of Thomas of Villanova who dedicated his life in service to the poor. Campus Ministry programs articulate and strengthen the commitment of the University to both the Gospel and the world.

Opportunties for Involvement Balloon Day

This Spring counterpart to our Fall Hunger Awareness Week has a two fold purpose: to benefit the hungry through a fund raising carnival and to provide our community with a day where we can celebrate the beauty of nature and the gift of each other.

Bigs and Littles

This organization is an opportunity devoted to helping young people in the local community. This program offers a variety of social and fun events designed to forge friendships between students and their little brothers and sisters between 7 and 11 years of age.

Habitat for Humanity

Join the hundreds of Villanovans who have spent Saturdays and vacations with and for the poor to build or repair homes.

Handicapped Encounter with Chirst (HEC)

An opportunity to assist with service retreats for and with physically disabled persons.

Homeless Awareness Day

In the spirit of St. Thomas of Villanova, recognized by history for his work with and for the poor, students work to prepare a day of collections, raffles and other fund raising events. Their intent is to conscientize the Villanova community to the needs of the poor, in particular the homeless.

Hunger Awareness Week (HAW)

Coordinated by Campus Ministry and run by student chairpeople, the HAW program, held in November, informs fellow Villanovans of the situation of world hunger and challenges them to respond.

Mission Projects

Villanova students travel during semester breaks to serve with missionaries either at home or abroad who have committed their lives to serve the poorest of the poor. In the past students have traveled to Philadelphia, Appalachia, Maine, Panama, and Mexico.

Volunteer Advisory Service

Seniors, interested in finding the best post graduate volunteer placements (1 to 2 years) in U.S. or abroad, can come to Campus Ministry for volunteer resources and referrals.

Villanova Committee for the Homeless of Philadelphia (VCPH)

Organized and led by student chairpeople, VCPH has five main programs: Street Outreach, Soup Kitchen Service, Campus Education and Fund Raising, Shelter Rehabilitation, and after school programs.

Additional programs include:

Sacramental Preparation (Baptism, Confirmation, Marriage), Pre-Cana weekends for engaged couples, Renewal Week, Scripture Reflection, Prayer Group, and Bereavement Support.

ADDITIONAL CAMPUS RESOURCES

Residence Hall Ministers

Augustinian Friars and/or Campus Ministry staff choose to live among the students to serve them in various ways. Others maintain office hours in residence halls or satellite offices. Services to students include: counseling spiritual direction, emergency intervention, community building, sacramental availability and presence as a Catholic adult role model to whom the students are encouraged to aspire.
