<< Emily Lawless of Villanova University: To Nationals in Individual
Intermediate Over Fences. >>
Spring 2006
<< One sponsored the class, the other competed in it: Nancy
Danch (left) sponsored section 2aB of beginner walk-trot-canter. This made her
one of several Villanova parents to sponsor a class in which one of their
children rode. Tavia Danch (right) was one of six Villanovia riders to place
second in their respective divisions. The November 19th show marked the first
time in the team's two-year history that Villanova hosted an IHSA show. >>
Fall 2005
<< Readington, NJ - In what will likely be the only Zone 3, Region 2 appearance at
Briarwood Farm this season, Delaware Valley College increased their lead over
the University of Delaware by one point in posting a narrow 30-29 victory.
Villanova, hosting an IHSA show for the first time in their two-year history,
scored 28 points. The University of Pennsylvania was next with 26, while Temple
was fifth but only five out with 25...
Third place went to the hosts, as Villanova competed with a full point card for
the first time ever (Emily Lawless, who was open flat/intermediate fences,
pointed out of the latter division at the October 30th show). Monica Fiss
(intermediate flat) and Carolyn Hurwitz (walk-trot) won blue ribbons for the
wildcats, while six others accounted for seven red reserve ribbons, including
Alli McGuigan in both of her novice sections...
McCoy extends season: University of Delaware graduate (and Villanova Head Coach)
Sara McCoy won her section of alumni flat, becoming the first Region 2 alumni
rider to qualify for Regionals. Though McCoy has 31 points on the flat, no one
else in the region can claim more than 22 points in either alumni division...
High Praise: Katie Benson, who co-owns Briarwood Farm with husband Jack, was
very happy with the way Villanova hosted today's show. The wildcat riders almost
seemed nervous as to whether they were doing everything properly that a school
should do when hosting a show. As a result, things ran very efficiently, enough
that Benson wanted to go on the record as to how impressed she was that the
wildcats were on top of everything. Villanova did something that is rarely seen
at IHSA shows: They ordered duplicate High Point and Reserve High Point Ribbons
in case of any ties. This worked out well, as both Norris and Hale could receive
the Reserve Rider Ribbons without actually having to ride off for the honor.
Why wait until tomorrow?: Villanova was wise to secure the November 19th date
at Briarwood as early as they did, for their neighbors to the north were also
interested. As recently as October 1st both the Villanova and United States
Military Academys' Coaches were certain that their schools were hosting at
Briarwood on November 19th. However upon further review it turned out that
Villanova had contacted Briarwood first, and was thus entitled to the date.
Though we at Campus Equestrian corrected our Zone 2, Region 1 page over a month
ago to show the United States Military Academy moving their date to Sunday the
20th, no one informed the official Drew University photographer, who showed up
at the Villanova show hoping to take pictures for the Drew yearbook. All worked
out fine in the end, as the photographer returned the next day and even got a
photo of the Drew 'Superfan' who attends all Drew sporting events.>>

<< When this picture was taken, Sarah Smith (left) and Christina Marrazza of
Villanova were competing in their first-ever IHSA show. That 2004-05 opening day
show was also the first ever appearance of the Villanova team within the IHSA.
The wildcats will host the fifth and final fall Region 2 hunter seat show at
Briarwood Farm on November 19th. Villanova is in fourth place overall heading
into what will be their 15th IHSA show in team history! >>
Fall 2005
<< Now in their second season, the Villanova wildcats moved up from 22 points
scored in their opener to 25 today. "We had 13 riders last season," says
Villanova Head Coach and alumni rider Sara McCoy. "This season we have 30." Save
for the open fences (where they have no riders as of yet) and the open flat
(where they have one rider, Emily Lawless, who was third in the division today),
the wildcats have MORE than one rider in each division, which will help them
block points and perhaps protect them when a rider points out somewhere. Wildcat
juniors Christina Marazza and Monica Fiss won intermediate fences classes, the
latter being a new member of the team in 2005-06. >>
Fall 2005
<< Villanova freshman Natalie
Marchand rode 'Breezin' to second place in her section of advanced
walk-trot-canter at the February 27th Delaware Valley/Alumni show. Wildcat
Head Coach Sara McCoy (in front, who rode for the University of Delaware as
an undergraduate) saw Villanova score 114 points in their first season in
the IHSA. >>
