Frequently Asked Questions
Who can join?
The Sailing Team is open to all Villanova University students.
I don't know how to sail. can I still join?
One of the sailing club's foundations of establishment is to train as many new sailors as possible. Everyone who is interested in learning to sail is welcome. Those also interested in learning to race or better their sailing skills are also encouraged to come to practice. Those who come often will pick up the basics in no time. Several members have never sailed before college and are now competitive in regattas.
What is the time commitment?
You determine your own actual commitment. If you can only make it once a week or not even, that's fine but the more people at practice the better it is for everyone else. For the most part our serious racers come to at least two practices per week. Regatta team selection is often based on practice attendance. Off the water, sailors are encouraged to take part in running the team. We are a completely student run club so the team determines all decisions.
Where do you meet?
We meet in front of the chapel three days a week at 3:00pm and are typically back around 6:00pm. The practices for the fall will be held on Monday, Thursday and Friday.
Where do you sail?
We practice at the Cooper River Yacht Club in NJ, about 30 minutes from campus. Our Team sails in MAISA, the Mid-Atlantic district of ICSA. In addition to MAISA regattas, we travel to NEISA and SAISA for some events, and compete against College Sailing's top teams every weekend.
What boats do you sail?
College sailing is mainly double handed dinghies. We practice in FJs, and 420s. There may also be some opportunities to sail on larger keel-boats as well.
So what do you do when your'e not sailing?
We have weekly team meetings and occasionally have team dinners and other parties.
Is there a fee?
Race Team Dues are $100 per semester. Recreational Team Dues are $50 per semester. First-time sailors get a reduced dues plan their first semester -- you pay less initially, and if you decide you want to stay on the team, then you pay the rest.
