The Team
The Villanova Sailing Team is currently a club sport. Although we are not a varsity sport at Villanova, we do compete against varsity level teams throughout the region. At this time, our sailing facilities are located at the Cooper River Yacht Club which is a thirty minute ride from Villanova's campus. We practice three times a week during both our fall and spring seasons in a fleet of eight FJs, which are double-handed competitive racing boats. We are part of MAISA (Mid-Atlantic Inter-collegiate Sailing Association), sail in mostly FJs, 420s, and Tech Dinghies and participate in full weekend intercollegiate regattas during both seasons..
Membership
The club is open to all Villanova University Students. We meet at 3:00pm on the Church steps for transportation to practice every Monday, Thursday, and Friday. In addition, we have team meetings at 8:00pm every Tuesday night in Bartley 208.
Race Team
Race Team members are usually experienced sailors who have participated in junior sailing programs, raced on their high school teams and/or have taught sailing in the summers. We also encourage new sailors to attend practices and work toward competing in our scheduled regattas. Regular practice attendance is not required, but any sailor interested in competing is strongly encouraged to attend at least two practices a week. The team owns a few drysuits and lifejackets, but if you own sailing gear, we suggest that you bring it to practices and regattas.
Race Team Dues are $100 per semester. This money goes toward our expenses, which include but are not limited to: league fees, yacht club fees and travel expenses.
If you are interested in joining, please send an email to The Team.
Recreational Members
If you enjoy sailing or would like to learn how to sail, please come to a practice. Don't worry if you do not own any sailing gear. All you need is some casual athletic clothes and shoes that can get wet. Lifejackets will be provided.
Recreational member dues are $50 per semester. This money goes toward both yacht club fees and transportation expenses.
